Third Reich

1. Germany under the Nazi regime, beginning in January 1933 and ending in May 1945. Literally “third empire” or “third realm”.

Usage notes

• Reich in German does not have all of the same connotations as empire does in English. Notably, it does not imply the existence of a monarchy.
