1. Sino-Xenic pronunciations are regular systems for reading Chinese in Japan, Korea and Vietnam, originating in medieval times and the source of large-scale borrowings of Chinese words into the Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese languages, none of which are genetically related to Chinese (excluding Sinitic topolects).

   Example: the Chinese term 歷史／历史 (lìshǐ, “history”) has the following Sino-Xenic descendants:

• Japanese: 歴史 ‎(れきし, rekishi)
• Korean: 역사 (歷史, yeoksa) (South Korea), 력사 (歷史, ryeoksa) (North Korea)
• Vietnamese: lịch sử (歷史)
