Etymology

Variant of Schnitzel, which used to be the dominating form before it became common in the sense of “cutlet” (to which it is now often restricted). Compare the verbs schnippeln ‎(“to snip”) and schnipsen ‎(“to nip off”). Ultimately all these forms pertain to schneiden ‎(“to cut”).
