Peking

Peking

English

Proper noun

Peking

  1. (dated) Former spelling of Beijing.

Usage notes

Although more common in English as late as the 1980s, the Postal Map romanization Peking is now less common than pinyin Beijing in standard English and, although not obsolete, can feel dated or even historical.

The adjectival form Pekingese remains more common than recent updates such as Beijingese and Beijinger.
