Kuddelmuddel n, m (genitive Kuddelmuddels, no plural)
From German Low German. The word originally meant “dirty linen” and is derived from the verb koddeln (“to wash clothes superficially”). The rhyming part might be based on Modder (“mud”), a Dutch form of which also led to English muddle.
