Etymology

From Middle High German diemuot, from Old High German diomuoti. The modern vowel -e- is from Middle Low German dēmōt, which, for its part, seems to be a phonetic adaptation of the Middle High German form. (The older word in the North is Old Saxon ōtmōdī.) Compare Dutch deemoed (likewise via Low German).
