Etymology

From Ancient Greek Χριστός ‎(Khristós, “anointed”); then via Latin Christus; through Sinitic with the characters 基督 for sound (sound of Chinese pronunciation in Zhaoqing district, Guangdong Province c.1584), with no relation to meaning of characters; then from Sino-Vietnamese (Hán-Việt) transmitted to Vietnam as cơ + đốc, Cơ đốc (also Cơ Đốc).
