Onomatopoeic; compare southern German Bussi(“kiss”) and similar forms in many languages. But possibly based on, or conflated with, a derivative of Proto-Germanic*bautaną(“to push”). A second sense “push” is attested for some Central Franconian dialects. It may even be the older one if Dutchbotsen(“collide”) is borrowed from it (as supposed in some of the literature).
