Etymology

Borrowing from Akkadian 𒂍𒃲 ‎(ekallu [É.GAL]), from Sumerian 𒂍𒃲 ‎(É.GAL, “palace, temple”). Compare Hebrew הֵיכָל ‎(hēḵāl), Aramaic הֵיכְלָא ‎(hēḵəlā), Arabic هَيْكَل ‎(haykal).
