Etymology

With 1875 renaming from Komalan Subprefecture (噶瑪蘭廳), from Min Nan 噶瑪蘭／噶玛兰 (Kat-má-lán), 蛤仔蘭／蛤仔兰 (Kap-chú-lân) or 蛤仔難／蛤仔难 (Kap-á-lān), names given to sites of the Kavalan tribe of Taiwanese aborigines.
