一旗揚げる ‎(ichidan conjugation, hiragana ひとはたあげる, romaji hitohata ageru)

1. (idiomatic) To make a name for yourself. To become famous for a reason.
   • 1935, 徳田秋声, 仮装人物:

     一旗揚 (ひとはたあ)げるつもりで上海 (シャンハイ)へ走 (はし)るところであった。

     Hitohata ageru tsumori de shanhai e hashiru tokoro de atta.

     He was about to run off to Shanghai and establish himself there.
