Korean

Symbol

(kk)

  1. A jamo (letter) of the alphabet of the Korean writing system, hangeul.
In North Korea, the letter is called 된기윽 (doengieuk), "strong ㄱ (gieuk)". In South Korea, it is called 쌍기역 (ssanggiyeok), "doubled ㄱ (giyeok)".
ㄲ is pronounced as a velar plosive with tense phonation (IPA: [k͈] or [ɡ̬]), i.e. similar to the English k, but with a stiff glottal opening.
