Etymology 2

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-riŋ ~ s-r(j)aŋ ‎(“to live, to be alive”). Cognate with Tibetan གསིང་མ ‎(gsing ma, “pastureland”), Old Chinese 生 ‎(*sreŋ, sreŋ-s, “to live, be born”) and Chinese 牲 ‎(shēng, “animal”).
