Etymology

From Old Khmer jley ‎(“one who is carried off; transportee; deportee; captive; etc.”), which was probably derived from Cham jalơy. Compare Modern Khmer ឈ្លើយ ‎(chhleuy, “captive”); Old Mon jlūy ‎(“one carried off during military operations”).
