Etymology

From רבי ‎(rebe, “rabbi”) +‎ ־ין ‎(in, “feminine suffix”). The צ ("ts") is likely only present as an intervocalic separator, although it may be interpreted as the remains of a Slavic feminine suffix, akin to Russian -ица ‎(-ica).
