Etymology

From הַקַּש ‎(hakásh, “the straw”) + שֶׁ־ ‎(she-, “that”) + שָּׁבַר ‎(shavár, “broke”) + אֶת ‎(ét, “[direct object marker]”) + גַּב־ ‎(gáv-, “back of”) + הַגָּמָל ‎(hagamál, “the camel”), hence literally “the straw that broke the camel’s back”; a calque from English.
