Etymology

From Old Turkic toγru "direct; correct; just", from Proto-Turkic, apparently via a Karluk source (compare Uzbek to'g'ri ‎(“straight, direct”), Uyghur тоғра ‎(toghra, “correct”)), such as Literary Chagatai. This is indicated by a pecualiar semantic shift and the retention of -ğ-.

Compare with native тура ‎(tura, “straight, direct”), which developed along the regular Kypchak path way from the same Turkic archetype.
