From Proto-Slavic*divъ, probably from Proto-Balto-Slavic*deiwas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European*deywós(“god”), with the alternate sense of "demon" probably taken from an Iranian language (compare Persian دیو(div)), ultimately of the same source. Compare диво(divo).
