Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *anj, close to Sanskrit अनीति ‎(ániti, “blow out”), Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌽 ‎(us-anan, “blow out”) and the like^[1]. Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *aidn(i)-, from Proto-Indo-European *Hoid- ‎(“to swell”). Cognate to Armenian aytnowm ‎(aytnowm, “to swell”), Old Norse økkr ‎(“swelling, lump, growth”), Latin inguen ‎(“groin, the genitals, tumefaction in the pubic region”).
