Etymology

Borrowing from Ottoman Turkish چراق ‎(çırak, “apprentice, novice, pupil”), from Persian چراغ ‎(čerâğ, čarâğ, “lamp, light, stove, wick, candlewick; director, guide; client, dependant; pasture”).
