Etymology

"Ball", earlier some "kind of jade". Bodman (1980) relates this to Wuming Zhuang klauA2 (ball), and relates (qiú, “gem-adorned”) to Tibetan གྲུ (gru, lustre of gems). This character had a softened initial in Proto-Min.
